What an Italian in Paris Loves to Do

Margherita Carli

Ah, Paris… the city of romance, art, history, fashion, and food. There’s a reason Audrey Hepburn once said, “Paris is always a good idea.” No matter what kind of traveler you are, Paris will always have something to offer—whether you're an art lover, a food enthusiast, or simply a person who enjoys the Parisian way of life. But let’s face it: when you’re surrounded by endless options, it can be hard to choose where to start.

As an Italian who's been living in Paris for the past three years, I’ve had my fair share of overwhelming moments trying to decide what to do. Sure, there are the must-see tourist spots, but if you’re looking for something a bit more refined, local, or off the beaten path, there’s a whole other Paris waiting to be explored.

So, whether you’re a seasoned Paris enthusiast or a first-timer eager to dive into the real Parisian vibe, here’s a list of some of my favorite activities around the city:

Soak up the Sun on a Cozy Terrasse

Paris and its terraces—could there be a more iconic duo? On even the chilliest winter day, a sunny terrasse is the place to be. Parisians know how to make the most of every ray of sunshine, and so should you. Some of my top spots? La Palette, Le Fumoir, Le Hibou, Le Charlot, and Le Fleur en l’Ile. Whether you’re people-watching or enjoying a good glass of wine, these cafés are the perfect embodiment of *dolce far niente*, the Italian art of doing nothing and loving every minute of it.

Chase the Sunset from Pont des Arts

There’s something magical about Paris at sunset, especially along the Seine. While the entire river offers stunning views, my personal favorite spot to watch the sky transform from golden to pink is from the Pont des Arts. This pedestrian bridge connecting Saint-Germain-des-Prés to the Louvre is a scene straight out of a movie. With street musicians adding to the charm, it’s the perfect place for a romantic stroll or to just pause and take in the beauty of Paris.

Wander Through Parisian Gardens

Paris is a city of beautiful gardens, and although the Tuileries and Luxembourg Gardens are always worth a visit, they can get a bit crowded—especially when the weather warms up. For a quieter, more intimate experience, head to the Palais Royal Gardens. Nestled in the heart of the city, this gem is less frequented by tourists but equally stunning. The beautifully manicured gardens are surrounded by historic arcades and boutiques, including Muscade, a delightful patisserie where you can indulge in some Paris-Brest while soaking in the serene atmosphere.

Get Lost in the Art & Design of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

If you’re passionate about art, design, or simply wandering through charming streets, Saint-Germain-des-Prés is where you need to be. The neighborhood is home to a wealth of art galleries, vintage stores, and independent design boutiques. It’s a true Parisian experience to wander the cobbled streets, pop into the little galleries, and stop at La Palette for a glass of wine while watching the world go by.

Experience Parisian Nightlife Like a Local

Paris nightlife? It’s legendary. But for a truly local experience, my advice is to find yourself a cool Parisian crowd (preferably with connections to *old money*—those are the ones with access to the city’s most exclusive clubs). Chez Castel in Saint-Germain is a classic. A favorite of icons like Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg, this intimate club remains a hidden gem of Parisian nightlife. While it’s a private members’ club, if you’re lucky (and your vibe is just right), Katy at the door might just make an exception. Trust me, Thursday nights are the best for a real locals’ vibe—far less crowded than the weekend.

Grocery Shopping, Parisian-Style

Even grocery shopping in Paris can be an adventure. If you’re looking to get a taste of the local food scene, head to Rue des Martyrs in the 9th arrondissement. This charming street is a haven for locals and is filled with cheese shops, bakeries, and épiceries you won’t find anywhere else. Afterward, you can stroll through Place Saint-Georges, which is as pretty as a postcard and lined with cozy cafés and restaurants.

Shopping at Le Bon Marché

For a more refined shopping experience, Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche is a must-visit. One of Paris’s most elegant department stores, it never disappoints with its curated selection of high-end fashion, beauty products, and gourmet foods. Whether you’re in the mood to splurge or just window shop, this iconic spot is the perfect place for a Parisian shopping spree.

This is just a glimpse of what Paris has to offer—and trust me, the list goes on. The beauty of the city lies in its ability to surprise you at every turn. Whether you’re here for a few days or a lifetime, Paris is a city that reveals its secrets little by little, and I’m here to help you uncover them.
